Story
For 100 years, the Gardena Buddhist Church (GBC) has been a place for learning and sharing Jodo Shinshu traditions, serving as a cultural and spiritual anchor for the Japanese American community in the South Bay. Founded in 1926, GBC’s story is intrinsically linked to the history of the Japanese American experience in Southern California—a story of immigration, resilience, and the enduring commitment to passing down heritage across generations.
Resilience and the Preservation of Identity
The Temple provided stability during challenging times, serving as a constant source of strength and community reconnection when families returned to the South Bay following the turbulent 1940s.
Today, this legacy of cultural vibrancy and Jodo Shinshu teachings is visible in events and programs that connect to JA traditions, such as Obon, Taiko, Tea Ceremony, Ikebana, and Seijinshiki.

Our commitment extends deeply into the future through our youth programs, including Dharma School, Japanese Language School, Preschool and Scouting Programs. These initiatives provide fundamental education, leadership training, and a safe, nurturing environment for early development.
