Kieshiki Ceremony

In coordination with the BCA, GBC will be sponsoring a  Kieshiki Affirmation Ceremony  on Sunday June 14, 2026.

Kieshiki is a tradition where individuals can publicly affirm their commitment to the Buddhist community and a nembutsu way of life; centered on gratitude, humility and mindfulness, with the realization that we are all interdependent and accepting of all.

Officiated by Bishop Marvin Harada of the Buddhist Churches of America, participants will formally take refuge in the Three Treasures - Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha - and receive their personal Buddhist (Dharma) Name.

Anyone interested in participating in the Kieshiki and receive your Homyo ( Dharma Name), we welcome you to sign up.

Homyo
( Dharma Name )

Particpants receive a Homyo composed of two kanji characters preceded by "Shaku" ( meaning ' disciple of Shayamuni').

You'll have the ability to select the first Kanji of your Homyo from the list provided.   Optionally, Rev John Iwohara is offering a one-on-one Homyo Consultation to help in understanding the meaning and selection process.  .

During this chat, you’ll help select the first Kanji (character) of your name. Whether you’re drawn to a symbol for "Light," "Joy," "Wisdom," or something that reflects your personal journey, this is your chance to make your Homyo a perfect fit.

Bishop Harada will then select your second kanji which will then complete your personal Homyo.
